Studio Portraiture: Learn How to Manipulate Light (4 hrs)

studio lighting workshop

Lighting Class Details ($99, max of 8 students)

If you have thought about setting up your own studio or trying your first studio session but have been confused or intimidated by the unique equipment and challenges, this class is for you! If you already know something about flash but are ready to learn more about lighting modifiers like the softbox, beauty dish, umbrella, etc. and practice them on a model, this class is also for you!

*NOTE: students enrolling in this class should have strong knowledge of manual camera settings and be comfortable adjusting them (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance).  If you’re not yet comfortable with this, please take photo 102 first.

Learn the basics of studio shooting and lighting techniques with a live model in a real studio environment. Great for those with no experience using large off camera lights or working solely in controlled lighting.

Major topics covered:

1. Learn to make a good portrait using only one light.
2. Learn the standard lighting scenarios such as loupe lighting, rembrandt lighting, butterfly lighting, split lighting.
3. Learn to set up a second light as a rim light or “kicker”
4. Understand flash sync and exposure controls for use with studio lights.
5. Learn about light shaping tools such as the softbox, umbrella, grid, snoot, and beauty dish.
6. Practice the techniques on our model as you get feedback from the instructor

Prerequisites-

-Students should have a basic understanding of manual exposure (setting aperture, shutter and ISO independently. If you have taken Photography 102 this will count too)
-Students should have a digital SLR type camera.

Class will start with a presentation and intro to the various types of equipment used in a studio, as well as a breakdown of how your camera settings interact with studio equipment. Hands on shooting will follow. We’ll have a great model and you’re free to use the images in your own portfolio or social media.

In order to give everyone the attention and help they deserve, the class size will be limited to 8 people and one model.
